What Your Airline Miles Can Teach You About Leading
Recently, I was traveling to Kenya with my good friend, Juan.
Some think my friend is actually my personal bodyguard.
If I needed one, he would definitely be my first choice.
As a military veteran, Juan is always thinking about safety.
When he asked me, "Do you know where the US embassy is in Kenya?" I replied with laughter, "No, that's why I have you traveling with me."
Although I enjoy traveling, Juan far exceeds my annual airline miles by a long shot.
I often refer to him Mr. VIP because, due to his years of consistent travel, he has accumulated an impressive history and a staggering number of airline miles.
Because of this longevity, we didn't wait in the standard lines.
We were ushered into a quiet, comfortable lounge—a haven of tranquility with complimentary refreshments, priority boarding, and space to work.
These are the perks you receive not from a single, spectacular trip, but from years of staying the course in the air.
Juan's status with the airlines is the perfect analogy for what I want to talk about: the often-unseen, but immensely valuable, benefits of longevity in leadership.
The Compound Effect of Leadership
In the world of business, we are often conditioned to look for immediate results— the immediate promotion, the generous ROI.
But the deepest, most resilient benefits of effective leadership are rarely seen right away; they accrue over the long haul.
Just like airline miles, every year you commit to continual learning, skill refinement (like top-tier coach training), and generous service is a benefit that compounds.
Trust and Credibility: You can't accelerate genuine trust.
It is earned through consistent, ethical decisions made over months and years.
This longevity allows your team and clients to rely on your judgment, providing you with immense capital when it truly matters.
Deepened Wisdom: True wisdom comes from experiencing the full cycle of successes and failures.
The longer you lead, the larger your repertoire of successful strategies, and the faster you can navigate unexpected challenges.
A Culture of Loyalty: Leaders who stay the course build teams that also stay the course.
This longevity reduces turnover, increases institutional knowledge, and creates a powerful, high-performing culture that is the envy of competitors.
My Encouragement to You
To realize benefits in leadership—the effortless influence, the deep team commitment, the unshakeable confidence—requires a refusal to give up.
So, as you look ahead, remember Juan and the comfortable lounge we thoroughly enjoyed.
The journey might feel long at times, but I want to encourage you to:
Stay the Course: Resist the urge to chase every fleeting trend.
Double down on your core values and the mission that first inspired you.
Continue Learning: Leadership is not a destination.
Invest in the skills of tomorrow, whether through advanced coach training or strategic frameworks.
Your future self will thank you for the competitive advantage.
Serve Generously: Be generous with your time, your mentorship, and your recognition.
The leaders you strengthen in the present, will be the pillars that support your vision tomorrow.
The greatest rewards in leadership are reserved for those who commit to the journey.
Keep leading, keep learning, and keep building that history.
Who knows what precious benefits you might discover and experience along your leadership journey.
