The Leadership Skill Most Leaders Overlook
When we think of great leadership, we often picture powerful speeches, bold decisions, or inspiring visions.
But one of the most underrated and transformative leadership skills is listening.
Truly effective leaders don’t just listen to respond.
Last night at our church we hosted the National Faith and Blue event to strengthen relationships between the local police, our community, and the church.
It was all about listening to one another to better understand and serve one another for the greater good.
You can see the picture of me and some of my new friends above.
Just as these police officers modeled for my community, leaders listen to understand, to draw out insight, and to create space for growth in others.
In fact, when leaders deepen their listening, they:
Strengthen trust across teams
Uncover innovative solutions that might otherwise remain hidden
Empower others to step up and lead
Here’s a simple exercise you can try this week: In your next conversation, resist the urge to fill the silence.
Instead, pause after the other person finishes speaking.
Ask one thoughtful, open-ended question that helps them explore their own thinking.
It’s a small shift, but over time, it cultivates a culture where people feel seen, heard, and valued.
And that’s where real leadership impact begins.
As someone committed to growth, I encourage you to lean into this practice.
The leaders who listen well aren’t just managing, they’re shaping future leaders.
