Martha was a hard-working, quiet agnostic.
Never in her wildest dreams did she ever consider becoming a Christian.
After many conversations with a co-worker, Martha’s perspective changed.
She finally accepted the invitation to attend church with her kids.
Martha was amazed at the love that she found in that small church.
She was exposed to insights from God’s Word that rocked her world.
And after some time, Martha believed in Jesus and His redemptive work.
She accepted Jesus as Savior, confessing her sins to Him in prayer.
A short time later, Martha was baptized.
Martha’s kids always joined her for church, but her husband remained home.
This caused much pain in Martha’s heart, but she always remained hopeful.
Finally, after years of prayer, her husband started attending Sunday services.
Something began to change in his mind and heart.
It was slow, but steady.
He made a public commitment to follow Christ and serve his family.
Have you?
There is no spiritual commitment without humility.
Spiritual Commitment Matters
Let’s review our key scripture before we dig deeper.
Philippians 2:1-2, CSB
If, then, there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love,
if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and mercy,
make my joy complete by thinking the same way,
having the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.
“If any fellowship with the Spirit”
Now that we’ve seen how humility leads us to practice personal encouragement in our marriage and family, what’s next?
Humility stimulates a strong spiritual commitment to Jesus Christ and to His spiritual body—the church.
These two connections must remain a top priority for your marriage to thrive.
These two connections must remain a top priority for your family to thrive.
These two connections must remain a top priority for your church to thrive.
These two connections must remain a top priority for your work to thrive.
These two connections must remain a top priority for your life to thrive.
The Holy Spirit connects you to God the Father through Jesus Christ, and He connects you to other believers.
Your marriage needs the fellowship of believers to flourish.
A spiritual commitment to God’s family serves to protect, direct, and grow your marriage.
It makes perfect sense to learn from other married couples—committed to following Christ in their marriage—with more experience.
If you did not have a good example of what selfless love is supposed to look like, other couples at church can model that character.
If you’ve never seen how someone respects their spouse, other married believers can show you how.
If you’ve never seen healthy communication when problems surface, others in your church can coach you through this process.
Therefore, a spiritual commitment to Christ and to a good local church is essential to the long-term health of your marriage.
But wait…there’s more.
As you and your spouse learn how to apply these principles in your marriage, you have the responsibility to train other couples to do the same.
You won’t be the first couple—nor the last—to ask these questions.
How can married couples argue respectfully?
How can married couples plan for their future?
How can married couples work through marriage problems?
How can married couples make better decisions?
How can married couples serve their community?
How can married couples raise their children in a healthy home?
How can married couples plan regular date nights?
How can married couples grieve the loss of a family member?
How can married couples endure cancer treatments?
How can married couples have a happy marriage?
How can married couples have more meaningful conversations?
How can married couples care for their elderly parents?
How can married couples get adequate insurance?
How can married couples pay for their school loans and buy a house?
How can married couples prepare for their children’s college education?
And this my friends, is where your local church can really make a difference.
Remember, the Holy Spirit unites believers for God’s purposes.
He will guide you and your spouse as you commit to Christ and His church.
2 Corinthians 13:13
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
Principles of Relational Sustainability
As a faith-based professional with a desire to grow your marriage, having a strong spiritual commitment to Christ and to His church is essential.
The word fellowship carries the idea of partnership.
The Holy Spirit spiritually baptizes us in Christ and makes us one in Christ.
The idea behind a partnership is shared responsibility.
The Holy Spirit functions to convict people of their sin, expose them to God’s holiness, make them aware of future judgment, and point them to Jesus.
I know this is quite a bit to process, but consider these questions:
Do you believe that Jesus came from heaven and lived without sin?
Do you believe that Jesus is God in the flesh?
Have you accepted Jesus as Savior and confessed your sins to Him?
Do you read the Bible daily and look for ways to share your faith with others?
Are you committed to a local church that preaches the Bible?
Are you consistently attending church services in person?
Are you giving 10% of your income regularly your local church?
Are you serving others regularly through your local church?
Do you meet regularly with a small group of believers to grow together?
You have a shared responsibility—with the Holy Spirit—to strengthen God’s church and share the good news of Jesus with others.
This is at the heart of what spiritual commitment is all about.
It takes humility to:
Trust Jesus—God’s Son—and follow His ways.
Believe the Bible—God’s Word—and apply it in your life.
Serve the church—God’s People—with your gifts, resources, and abilities.
Love others—starting with your spouse—generously and sacrificially
Give regularly—to God’s Church—and grow in the grace of giving.
Build people—and meet with a small group—to share your life together.
And here’s the good news.
When you’re willing to humble yourself, the results are transformational.
When you’re willing to humble yourself, your marriage—and every other relationship—can thrive.
When you humble yourself and allow God’s Spirit to shape your life, change is inevitable.
In our next article, we will continue to clarify how humility stimulates encouragement and oneness in Your Marriage?
Personal Application
A commitment to Jesus Christ and to a local church is essential for the long-term health of your marriage and family.
Your commitment in these two areas will directly affect every other area of your life.
Humble yourself. Allow God’s Word and God’s people to speak into your life.
Give a few faithful believers permission to challenge you about your marriage relationship.
At times it may be painful, but it will reap good fruit in your relationship.
In Christ, God promises to finish His good work in your life and in your marriage (Philippians 1:6)
